Is it time to devote a site to the psychoanalytic idea of the death drive as introduced in Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principal”?
We think it is, and despite the undeniable fact that we have allowed this internet local to fester and hang on our persons like an unnoticed stain for better than a year, we are now remounting our efforts to introduce this variant of the psychoanalytic plague.
The Death Drive may well be the Freudian concept most misunderstood, it is also perhaps the most important. What Freud introduced to the psychoanalytic world through his revolutionary work Beyond the Pleasure Principal remains our best description of an essential dynamic of human life. Life’s very aim or thrust. As such it is indispensable to psychoanalysis. The aim of this Blog is to enlarge the discussion of the theories introduced in Beyond the Pleasure Principal of 1920. So, if you will join our suspicion that Freud’s concept of the Death Drive, holds tremendous implications for psychoanalytic practice as well as for the furtherance of the theory we we invite you to come to work with us here on this site. In so doing we would like this blog to stimulate a fertile dialogue on Freud’s work and on psychoanalysis in general.
The confusion, havoc and delay already caused by this potent dynamic we think does not offer a sufficient excuse to disregard this penetrating view of life. Freud’s discovery here as elsewhere proves the power of the science he founded. We appreciate any comments directed at a better understanding of this concept as it is applied both clinically and in more theoretical disciplines.
